Artist Statement
My work is often an exploration of the body, the fragility of life and decay. I am interested in the relationship I have with my own anatomy, and how it changes due to my chronic illness -Inflammatory Arthritis. My fears and insecurities of my illness have led me to question my own art practice. The use of my hands in particular have been a significant role of my practice as materiality, physicality and labour are important in producing my artworks.
An anatomical, forensic and even clinical aesthetic, is often seen throughout my work. As my work takes the form of hand made sculptures, the choice of my materials are crucial as I want the viewer to question the tactile quality. Surrogate materials like wax, latex and bones are used to contrast the tough / man made materials of plastic and steel.
